Everyone has experienced an awful night’s sleep or have heard of someone who has, but few experience the chronic night after night failure to sleep for months on end. Insomnia is defined as the inability to get to sleep or the inability to stay asleep for any length of time.

In order to have chronic insomnia, you must have at least a month of insomnia that occurs on most nights of the time. Chronic insomnia has the capacity to be somewhat dangerous because it affects our levels of stress, anxiety, other mental illness, depression and ability to fight off illnesses.

Even things like drinking too much caffeine at night or smoking before bedtime can play a role in having trouble sleeping. When you have suffered from several poor night’s sleep in a row, it is a good time to look at these underlying sleep factors to see if you can change something in order to get back on a normall sleep schedule.

When You Have Chronic Insomnia, Every Part of Your Day Can Be Affected

Work performance and social performance is negatively affected and your judgment is impaired. It can even change your personality so you say and do things that just aren’t you. There are three different types of insomnia: 1) there is transient insomnia that only lasts a few nights at a time; 2) there is intermittent insomnia that affects your ability to sleep sometimes but not other times; 3) there is chronic insomnia that lasts for at least a solid month. Chronic insomnia is the most dangerous type of insomnia and is also the most difficult to treat.

The Main Insomnia Symptoms You Should Be Aware of

Are those including restless sleeping, difficulty falling asleep, wakening frequently during the night, and waking up too early and being unable to get back to sleep at all. There are many factors that fall into play that make these symptoms come to light. It can be a stressful job, money worries, physical health issues, anxiety, depression and many other factors. You should consider having a visit with your doctor in order to find the cause of the insomnia because often it is the treatment of the underlying cause that plays the biggest role in treating the insomnia.

People who are insomniacs have both daytime and nighttime symptoms during the day, they cannot concentrate on their job or on reading; they may not be able to drive safely or won’t be safe operating a motorized vehicle on their job. Their overall motor coordination is at risk and they cannot interact well with others, being irritable and crabby much of the time. They can get into car accidents because of their poor motor skills and daytime drowsiness.
