When you are tired of feeling tired, it is time to take a look at your sleep hygiene and see if any of your habits are causing your sleep disorders. Knowing how to sleep is not something that everyone can do well.

Here are 5 tips that may help you get through the night

  1. Don’t exercise close to bedtime. This only causes your brain and body to experience a boost in activity.
  2. Never lie in bed ruminating about not sleeping. Instead, get yourself up and do something monotonous or boring. The trick is not to expose yourself to too much light or stimulation.
  3. Avoid naps at all costs! No matter how tired you feel during the day try not to take a nap. This can disrupt your sleep schedule. If you must relax, commit to only 20 minutes of relaxation.
  4. Avoid caffeine or stimulants after 2pm. The effects of your afternoon cup of coffee can be the one thing keeping you up at night. Avoid caffeinated beverages as well as chocolate or overly sugared foods.
  5. Use your bed for sleeping ONLY! Don’t lie in bed and watch TV or play on the computer.

Learning how to sleep better can take some time and adjustments. Keep in mind that as you get older you may need less sleep than before and adjusting your bed and waking times may help.
